FIELD NOTE / PRODUCT & AI

Time to software does not equal time to value.

AI changed the cost of building software. It didn't change the cost of building the wrong thing.

We can prototype, build and ship faster than ever. That's a huge advantage. But somehow the takeaway in a lot of organizations is that we need less discovery and less strategy.

I think it's the opposite.

AI makes it incredibly easy to add another feature to a product nobody needed, automate a broken workflow or launch a pilot that looks great in a demo and goes nowhere in production.

Software isn't the scarce resource anymore. Judgment is.

Which problems are actually worth solving? Which should we redesign instead of automate? And what has to change across systems, data, policy and operations before any of it creates value?

I'm not advocating for eight weeks of workshops and a giant deck. I'm talking about a tight loop between strategy, prototyping and evidence. Form a thesis. Test the risky assumptions. Put something in front of users. Scale the ideas that survive.

The cheaper software gets, the more expensive bad judgment becomes.
